Stop 1 - The Market

This aerial view in 1945 looking north at the previous area shows the lumber company at upper right, the Town House (sans addition and sign) where you're standing, the Fair Oaks Market left of the oak tree and Sherwood Florist directly across from you. About half of the buildings between there and the Murphy block still stand. The Fair Oaks Market existed from about 1935 to 1970 when it was replaced by the Shire Road Pub, a local nightclub where rock bands played. The Pub burned in 1977 and the area became part of the parking lot for the Village Mortuary.
