The Sylvan Cemetery, located in our neighboring city of Citrus Heights, Sacramento County, California, was founded on land donated by Daniel Lewis in 1862 and at that time consisted of only 1/10th of an acre. The first grave was that of James Horton, buried September 1864. The Cemetery District was formed in 1926.

The significance of this cemetery to Fair Oaks is that it was founded about 40 years prior to our Fair Oaks Cemetery and probably contains the graves of many of our former residents and neighbors. The cemetery contains over 6,800 burials.

In the early 2000's a project was identified by Steven Sprague, Eagle Scout Troop 54, Citrus Heights, to enter the list of individuals buried in Sylvan Cemetery into a data base that was donated to the California GenWeb and is on-line at their site at The Tombstone Transcription Project.

Because there is no home page for Sylvan Cemetery or the data on burials, the information is difficult to locate, and one can only find partial references to the data on the Google and Yahoo search engines, we have decided to replicate the links to the listings below.

If you need further information, staff at the cemetery office will be happy to assist you.
